Maruti Suzuki first launched its tall-boy hatch – the WagonR, in 1999. With its bread box design, it did look a little unconventional, but was a runaway success. A lot of the first time car buyers flocked to the Maruti showrooms to drive away with a WagonR. In 2010, the WagonR was upgraded. In 2013, Maruti came out another facelift and four new versions – three petrol variants along with a CNG. The facelifted 2013 WagonR has a spruced up exterior, more features, an improved fuel economy and a taller stance.
The upgraded WagonR now sports a dual-slat front grille with a single horizontal slat. The higher variants get more chrome on the grille. There is a huge air dam and sporty fog lamps. The bumper has been revised to cut down on friction. On the rear, the car gets new revised taillights. The price of the Wagon R ranges from Rs. 3.48 to 4.34 lakhs.
The new dual-tone beige and black interiors and upholstery gives the car a refreshing appeal. The upper half of the dashboard is in beige while the lower half is in black. For the higher variants, the twin-tone theme continues with the upholstery as well, while the top-end VXi model comes with classy all-beige upholstery.
The steering wheel and the dashboard mounted gearbox are new. The overall length of the WagonR has been slashed marginally while the wheelbase remains pretty much unchanged. Plus, it also gets a new storage compartment above the glove box along with the option of day-night view for the rear-view mirror. The VXi model gets an integrated Eagle Wings music system with integrated USB and AUX-in ports.
The new WagonR carries on the same 998 cc 3-cylinder, K-10 engine that generates 67 bhp @ 6200 and 90 Nm of torque @ 3500 rpm. The 5-speed manual transmission provides smooth manoeuvring of the car. The CNG version of the engine delivers 58 bhp @ 6200 rpm and 77 Nm of torque @ 3500 rpm. The facelifted car claims to deliver a fuel efficiency of 20.51 kmpl in petrol and 19.3 kmpl in CNG. There is an increase of 8% in fuel economy.
The 2013 WagonR retains the cable type transmission and frame-type suspension of its predecessor model. Thanks to its gas filled setup, the car feels very different from the oil filled older mechanism. The NVH levels have also been improved. Maruti has improved the front suspension to ensure that the car handles better than before.
Besides a fresh dual-tone colour, Maruti Suzuki WagonR is available in two new colours – Ecru Beige and Passion Red aside from the existing Glistening Grey, Superior White, Breeze Blue, Silky Silver, Baker’s Chocolate.
